Former Liverpool right-back Glen Johnson believes Chelsea should make a move for PSV Eindhoven and The Netherlands international forward Cody Gakpo.
Gakpo has been in exceptional form this season. The 23-year-old has taken the World Cup by storm, scoring three goals in four games for his country. It is not surprising given the form he was in the Eredivisie since the start of the season.
The forward has made 14 league appearances, scoring nine goals and registering another 12 assists in the process. Given the form, he is in currently, a lot of clubs would be interested in signing him.
Now former right-back Johnson believes that Blues should make a move for in-form forward. Speaking to Fair Betting Sites (h/t Football. London), the former defender gave his opinion.
“Cody Gakpo has really caught my eye at the World Cup. It’s not easy to score at this level, also the way he reads the game, the way he plays and moves, he looks the real deal. In terms of personnel, Chelsea need Gakpo more than Liverpool.”
“Chelsea have always had fantastic wingers, but they never scored goals, if you don’t get in those positions to score goals there’s not much point in you being in the team. Gakpo looks like he could do it in the Premier League, he looks like he would burst onto the scene like Darwin Nunez and Luis Diaz has for Liverpool.”
Graham Potter can indeed do with someone like Gakpo in his squad. The Blues bought in Pierre-Emile Aubameyang and Raheem Sterling this season to bolster their attack. However, both players have struggled in front of the goal this season.
Other attackers like Christian Pulisic and Hakim Ziyech have very uncertain futures and have struggled to get minutes this season. So despite having some good options, the Blues have still struggled to find the back of the net this season.
Adding a forward like the 23-year-old could help the west London club turn their fortunes in front of goal. Should the Blues take an interest in the forward they will have to fight off competition from Manchester United and Arsenal, who have been following the player for some time.
It remains to be seen if the west London club make any approach for the forward. The 23-year-old is seeing his stock rise every day and it will be wise for the Blues to start considering the forward as an option to target this winter before other clubs start laying the foundations to sign him.
Hopefully, Liverpool are content with the attacking options that they have and don’t go after Gakpo. We can use a player of his ilk given our problems up front with attackers in recent years. He could be the man to lead our line for the next 5-7 years.
