“Ciao”- Jorginho makes a muted point of sorts regarding Chelsea contract

Jorginho jokingly walks out of interview when asked about Chelsea contract

Speaking to Sky Sports Italia (h/t Metro), Chelsea midfielder Jorginho briefly spoke about his contract situation at the club and then jokingly walked away from the interview.

The Italy international, who had a few weeks off due to no World Cup participation, is having his contract at Stamford Bridge expiring at the end of this season (Transfermarkt).

Back in October, Evening Standard reported that Chelsea and Jorginho have failed to reach an agreement after initial discussions on a contract extension as the player wants a pay rise at par with the club captain Cesar Azpilicueta, who himself signed a new deal in the summer.

When asked about his contract situation, here’s what the 30-year-old said (h/t Metro):

“It’s normal to speak about it [his future].”

After that, he started laughing and abruptly ended the interview by saying:

“You said that was the last question… so, ciao ciao!”

It remains to be seen what is to happen regarding the midfielder’s future. Since he arrived at Stamford Bridge in 2018, he has been one of the key players in the team, helping them win the Champions League in 2021.

The 2021 Euros winner can play that deep-lying midfielder role and stay an integral part of this team. Whether Graham Potter wants to build the midfield around him may determine whether the player gets the new contract as per his pay wishes or not.

If we lose Jorginho, he could become the second senior midfielder to leave the club for free at the same time, with N’Golo Kante in a similar contractual situation and heavily linked with a move away to Barcelona.

If that happens, the club would need to work hard to fill the gaps in the central midfield department. We are linked with Declan Rice, but only one signing won’t be enough. An important few transfer windows lie ahead if we are to get the team structure right, starting from midfield.
