Chelsea star Kai Havertz sends message to Germany fans after World Cup exit

FIFA World Cup watch: Chelsea and Germany forward Kai Havertz has apologised to his country’s fans

Chelsea and Germany forward Kai Havertz has apologised to his country’s fans after his side were knocked out in the group stage of the World Cup, despite winning their last game 4-2 against Costa Rica.

The Germans knew that a win over Costa Rica and Japan failing to beat Spain would be good enough to see them through. But the Japanese had other plans as they scored two goals in three minutes to win their game 2-1 and qualified for the next round with Spain finishing second in their group.

Havertz, who came off the bench and scored a brace to help his country win, was understandably not happy. Speaking to the media after the game (h/t Express), the 23-year-old apologised to his fellow countrymen.

“We are sorry to have to again disappoint them at a World Cup. Our fans have been dreaming of this for years and we have been dreaming of playing with the support of our fans. Now we’ve disappointed them again. We apologise and hope to do better next time.”

It is really surprising to see the Germans eliminated again. They were one of the favourites, but will now be heading home. This was their consecutive elimination from the group stage at the World Cup, although it was Havertz’s first.

The 23-year-old played in two of the three group games for his side, scoring two goals in the process. While he was named man of the match against Costa Rica, it was not enough to see his side through.

On a positive note, Graham Potter will get to link up with the player early. The forward has been a regular for us this season, playing in 20 games so far in all competitions, scoring four goals in the process.

Havertz could do with some rest as he is likely to play an important role for Potter in the second half of the season too. Whether the German returns to west London immediately or takes a break before going back is something that remains to be seen.

The Blues forward was one of the best players for his country in the tournament and he should be proud of that. Havertz should try and put this behind him and focus on the task at hand. He is still young and will likely play a couple more World Cups for his country.

It remains to be seen if this early departure from the tournament has any adverse effect on the forward’s second half of the season with the Blues.
