According to Portuguese journalist Pedro Almeida (h/t Football. London), Chelsea have made a massive €120m+€10m bid for Argentinian World Cup-winning star Enzo Fernandez from Benfica.
The Blue are keen on signing the talented midfielder in January but face competition from Liverpool and several other top European clubs. However, they are willing to splash the cash for him.
Enzo Fernandez caught the eye of several top clubs around the world with his performances in the World Cup. He was rightfully awarded the ‘FIFA Young player of the tournament’ award.
The Benfica man was Argentina’s driving force in midfield. He kept the ball ticking despite playing in a deeper role than he plays for his club and also had a sensational goal against Mexico.
Enzo might have joined Benfica only in the summer but he already looks like he is too big for the Portuguese club. The Argentinian midfielder deserves to be playing at a higher level than he is.
Just 21 years old, Enzo is unbelievably mature for his age. He always knows how to make the right pass, seems to bypass pressure with ease and almost has a Jorginho-like feel to him.
This is exactly why Chelsea might be so interested in signing him. Jorginho’s contract expires in the summer and he is yet to renew a new deal with the club and would leave as a free agent as things stand.
Newcastle United are being linked with a move for the Italian as they look to make him their marquee January signing. In the event of that happening, Enzo could be the perfect replacement for the player.
It remains to be seen how this Enzo situation develops. If the bid we have made is indeed true, it is quite a substantial bid that Benfica might accept. However, we will have to wait and see.
