Chelsea are set to ramp up their interest in signing Denzel Dumfries

According to Sport Italia (h/t Football.London), Chelsea are set to ramp up their interest and make a concrete attempt to sign Inter Milan defender Denzel Dumfries in the January transfer window.

The report further states that following his exploits in the World Cup, the Dutch international won’t be valued at anything below £53m. Blues chairman Todd Boehly won’t be put off by the price tag though.

Chelsea has been concerned by the number of injuries Reece James has picked up in the last 12 months. The England defender missed the World Cup due to a knee injury sustained in October. He came back to competitive action in the Blues’ win over Bournemouth but picked up another injury, that has set him back for another few weeks.

Dumfries has been one of the consistent wing-backs in the last year or so. The performances in the World Cup were not just a one-off, but a culmination of the good performances he has been delivering in club football.

The former PSV Eindhoven defender is a wing-back who can play as a wide centre-back if needed. He is great going forward and delivering crosses into the box while being solid defensively and dealing with tricky wingers in one-on-one situations.

Dumfries has been doing well for Inter Milan.

In a way, the 26-year-old is similar to James in the qualities and attributes he possesses. If Chelsea manage to sign him, they can have a like-for-like replacement or backup for James in the right wing-back position going forward, without compromising much on quality.

More Chelsea News:

The Blues resumed their season with a convincing win over Bournemouth on Tuesday. We can hope that the start is a sign of good things to come in the second half of this season. Signing players would add much-needed competition and new energy to the squad.
