According to JeunesFooteu (h/t Football.London), Chelsea have joined Liverpool in the race to sign Sheffield United midfielder Sander Berge in the January transfer window.
The report claims that the Norway international is keen on moving away from the Blades, after spending only one season with them in the Premier League and then dropping back down to the Championship.
Football.London reported that the Blues explored the possibility of signing Berge on loan on the deadline day of the summer window, but a move did not materialise.
Berge is a central midfielder by default who can operate as a deep-lying or as a box-to-box midfielder. He has also played as a centre-back in a handful of games in his career so far, none at Sheffield United though.
The 24-year-old’s contract at Bramall Lane lasts until the summer of 2024 (Transfermarkt), having joined Sheffield United from Genk in January 2019.
During the first half of this season, Berge played 13 games in all competitions, scoring three goals and assisting three. He played almost all of the game as a box-to-box midfielder.
The Norwegian star is a good player on the ball who can create chances from midfield. His height allows him to be a physical presence in midfield to win and battle for those aerial duels. He is good at making late runs in the opposition box to have a pop at goal.
It is no secret that Chelsea are looking at the possibility of making additions to their central midfield department. Likes of Declan Rice and Jude Bellingham have been linked with us for some time now.
Berge offers an opportunity to sign a player for a lower price comparatively and still be an upgrade on the options currently available in the squad.
He is a good player who is improving with age and experience. If Graham Potter thinks he can get the best out of him, there is no reason why we should not go after this player in January.
