Chelsea and defender Ben Chilwell fear that his hamstring injury could keep him out for months

According to the Telegraph, Chelsea and their defender Ben Chilwell are set to receive bad news confirming that a hamstring injury will keep him out of the World Cup amid fears that he could be out for months.

Chilwell pulled up very late in the game against Dinamo Zagreb on Wednesday. The moment he lay on the floor, the signs were ominous. He left Stamford Bridge on crutches after the game, which is never a good sight.

Both the club and the player are now waiting for the results of the scan, but both parties expect the result to be bad in terms of the latter missing the World Cup and also missing action for the next few months. It is apparently a torn hamstring that may keep him out for at least three months.

After missing a major chunk of last season due to a ruptured cruciate ligament, Chilwell seemed to have regained fitness at the start of this season. He was not starting every game, perhaps keeping his recent past in mind.

Despite doing all that, the 25-year-old has managed to pick up a serious injury that is set to keep him out from travelling with England to Qatar.

It would be a tough time for Chilwell, who would probably have been one of the first-choice left-backs in Gareth Southgate’s team.

Now, what he can do is work hard on his recovery and cheer his countrymen from home. His teammate and fullback partner at Chelsea Reece James is also out of the World Cup. So, England are without two dynamic and top-class fullbacks/wing-backs for this tournament.

All this happening does beg the question of the timing of this event and the consequences it had on the domestic season, in terms of cramped schedule and players falling like nine pins.
