Speaking to the media (h/t Evening Standard), Chelsea centre-back Trevoh Chalobah insists that he is ready to play for England if called upon in the upcoming World Cup in Qatar.
Since the injury to Wesley Fofana, which he picked up against AC Milan a couple of weeks ago, Chalobah has been one of the ever-presents in the defensive department.
The Englishman has done well so far and helped the team keep clean sheets for five consecutive games now. Even though he is not a popular choice, the 23-year-old’s current form has gone a bit under the radar.
Here’s what he said regarding his readiness to represent England in the World Cup (h/t Evening Standard):
“Yes, if it comes, I’m ready for what’s ahead. It’s always a kid’s dream to be called up. But my focus is to give my all for the club and then see what happens.
“For me, the first thing was to play for Chelsea and get myself back in the team, and I’m doing that now. That’s the most important thing for me.”
England manager Gareth Southgate can name a provisional squad of up to 55 players, from which he will finalise the 26 who will take the flight to Qatar in November. The final date to name the provisional squad is October 21.
Chalobah would be hoping that his name is there on that list. After that, he has games coming up where he can perform and show the national team boss why he should be on the plane.
England do have a problem in central defence, with Harry Maguire out of form and John Stones injured at the moment. Southgate prefers to play three at the back. Hence, he would need five to six in-form centre-backs in the squad for the tournament.
Keeping that in mind, if Chalobah continues his good little run of form for the next few games, there is no denying that he could be included in the final squad.
Of course, there are players ahead of him in the pecking order and Southgate is generally a reputation-based squad picker rather than on current form. But, the only thing the 23-year-old can do is perform well for the club and hope for the best.
