Transfer News: Fabrizio Romano claims that Christopher Nkunku is ‘waiting’ to sign his Chelsea contract

According to renowned journalist Fabrizio Romano via his column in Caught Offside (h/t Football. London), RB Leipzig attacker Christopher Nkunku is ‘waiting’ to sign his Chelsea contract.

It was earlier reported that the 24-year-old had undergone a ‘secret medical’ in the summer in preparation for a move to Stamford Bridge. And now, Romano has given an update about how the transfer of the player is likely to undergo.

“It’s important to mention that Chelsea have everything under control, he’s agreed in principle to join, he’s had a medical with Chelsea, and he’s waiting to sign his contract.”

“Everyone who’s joining Chelsea all agree that Nkunku will be an excellent signing for the Blues. Just a reminder – Chelsea don’t plan to meet Nkunku’s €60m release clause, they plan to reach a different agreement.”

The French international signed a new contract with his current side in the summer, although he is believed to have a release clause that can be activated from next summer. His current contract is set to expire in the summer of 2026 (transfermarkt).

Nkunku has been in fine form since moving to the Bundesliga club in 2019 from Paris Saint-Germain. The 24-year-old has made 18 appearances in all competitions so far this season, scoring 12 goals in the process.

A very versatile player, the forward can be deployed anywhere in the front three and also can play in the midfield. This has made the Frenchman a constant threat to his opposition this season.

Kai Havertz has on numerous occasions played as a centre-forward for the club. While he has been able to deliver results, they have been inconsistent and we can’t blame him for that considering he isn’t a natural striker.

Signing Nkunku would allow the German to thrive in a role where he could play down the middle of the attack, with the Frenchman leading the line along with Raheem Sterling and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

The 24-year-old also has interest from other top clubs over the past year. His raw pace with his versatility has made him a player to fear and this is someone the Blues could do with going ahead.

It remains to be seen if the west London club can agree to a deal with Leipzig for the transfer of the player. He has everything to succeed here at Chelsea and hopefully, is the answer we have been looking for when it comes to getting consistent goals and assists from an attacker.

More Chelsea News:

It seems that the deal is all but done and it could just be a matter of time before see Nkunku don the Chelsea shirt, if Romano is to be believed. Exciting times to be a Chelsea fan, for sure.
