According to The Sun (h/t Daily Mail), Crystal Palace will make a bid for Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher in January. The Eagles will do so if Gallagher loses his place in the Blues midfield.
Palace were interested in the 22-year-old this summer too. They wanted to take the midfielder on loan again, but Thomas Tuchel wanted to keep the midfielder at Chelsea.
The Eagles, however, have not given up and will consider coming back in January. The report also adds that they will try to secure a deal for around £20 million plus add-ons.
Gallagher spent the last season on loan at Selhurst Park. The England international excelled there scoring eight goals and notching three assists in 34 league games. He was also voted the Crystal Palace Player of the Season for the 2021-22 campaign.
Such form earned him his maiden call-up to the national team. And Tuchel also included him in his plan for this season. But, life at Chelsea has not started very well for the 22-year-old.
He has struggled in the middle of the park. Poor performances for the past few games have led to him being criticised. The 22-year-old was sent-off against Leicester City, while he was poor against West Ham United.
Gallagher will face competition for his place on the team. Mateo Kovacic, Denis Zakaria and Carney Chukwuemeka will all eye to replace the midfielder in the middle of the park. The 22-year-old has a fighting spirit and will likely fight for a place on the team.
It is highly unlikely that the Blues will want to sell one of their most talented midfielders to a rival. But January is a long way away, and anything can change in between. For now, the 22-year-old is part of Chelsea’s squad and he will focus on that being the case till the end of the season.
