As per a tweet from CFCPys, via Mike Verweij (h/t Football.London), Chelsea are open and keen on making a transfer move for Ajax midfielder Edson Alvarez during the January transfer window.
The player was linked with a move to Stamford Bridge, but the Dutch side rejected the switch after Chelsea made a £43.2m bid to sign him on deadline day. He was angry at this decision, but nothing could be done about it at the time.
However, as mentioned above, there is always an opportunity for the club and the player to make this move happen in a few months’ time in the winter window. From the Blues’ viewpoint, it would be best not to leave it very late in the window before making an offer.
Alvarez is a flexible player who can play both as a defensive midfielder and as a centre-back. He arrived at Ajax from Mexican side Club America in the summer of 2019 and has been one of the regular faces for them in the team.
The three league games of this season and 31 of last has seen the 24-year-old playing predominantly as a defensive midfielder. That is where his primary position has become now, with the flexibility of moving back a few yards if and when needed.
He has everything you want in a defensive-minded midfield player. The Mexican international is a great passer of the ball, reads the danger well, is physically strong and has a good passion for the game.
So, it is clear to see why, even that late in the summer window, Chelsea were eyeing up his signature from Ajax. The Blues should definitely go back for him as early as possible in January.
For now, Chelsea have a league game against West Ham United coming up, before they kick start their Champions League campaign away to Dinamo Zagreb on Tuesday.
