According to German outlet Bild (h/t Mirror), recently-appointed Chelsea manager Graham Potter could recall loaned-out winger Callum Hudson-Odoi in January from German side Bayer Leverkusen.
Hudson-Odoi moved to Leverkusen on a season-long loan deal in the latter half of the summer transfer window. Chelsea did not include an option or obligation to buy in the contract.
The 21-year-old, who was frozen out of the squad after a fringe role last season by former manager Thomas Tuchel, was a subject of interest from Brighton and Hove Albion when Potter was in charge of them.
Now, with the latter working at Chelsea, he could offer a lifeline to Hudson-Odoi by bringing him back to Stamford Bridge halfway through the season. Along with the no-buy option, co-owner Todd Boehly included a recall option in this loan deal.
If this does indeed happen, it would be a fresh opportunity for the Englishman to prove his worth in a Chelsea shirt. He was played out of position at wing-back by Tuchel, something he described as frustrating.
The winger made only 28 appearances in all competitions last season, some of them coming on as a substitute. He scored three goals and assisted six in those games.
Hudson-Odoi is a bright young player who has grown up in the Chelsea academy. His performances for Leverkusen has shown that there is a player in there who was not completely utilised by Tuchel.
The fact that Potter wanted to sign him when he was at Brighton, shows that the manager knows how to get the best out of him.
So, Chelsea should not hesitate in supporting the manager’s decision and get the 21-year-old back playing for the club soon. He could be a valuable addition in the wide areas going forward with his pace and direct running with the ball.
