International Watch: Two Chelsea youngsters named in England U21 squad

Chelsea starlets Conor Gallagher and Levi Colwill called up to the England Under-21 national side

Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher has been called up to the England Under-21 national side, which was known after the squad was confirmed on their Twitter account.

The 22-year-old has been dropped from the senior side after earning a call-up in June earlier this year. The Blues midfielder made his senior debut in November 2021.

Lee Carsley, the manager of the Young Lions team said that he welcomes Gallagher back to the squad. In an interview quoted in The Athletic (Subscription Required), the manager gave his thoughts.

“We welcome Conor Gallagher back to the group, which is another example of us having a fluid pathway across our national teams. I know Conor will take to the pitch with as much pride in wearing an England shirt for the U21s as he would for the seniors.”

Gallagher has got off to a rather disappointing start this season. The 22-year-old enjoyed a very memorable spell on loan at Crystal Palace last season but has not been able to replicate that same form for the Blues this season.

The midfielder has played in six games this season in all competitions, starting in three of them. He is yet to score or assist any goal and maybe this is why he has been dropped from the senior side.

Levi Colwill, who is on loan at Brighton & Hove Albion from Chelsea this season has also been called up. The centre-back featured for the Young Lions in March earlier this year.

Both the players will have a chance to prove their worth for both club and country. Good performances here could help their chances of making the senior squad for the World Cup in November, especially for Gallagher.

England will play Italy on September 22 and Germany on September 27 for the final international break before the World Cup. Fans will hope their players get a chance to make their country proud.
