According to a report in The Times (h/t football.london), Chelsea and Stamford Bridge could miss out as a potential venue for the Euro 2028.
The United Kingdom along with Ireland is expected to submit a joint bid to host the international tournament. There is a good chance that the bid will be successful.
And as such plans need to be drawn up to select the host venues. As few as six English stadiums will be used and there are some surprise omissions.
Stamford Bridge is set to miss out while Liverpool’s Anfield and Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium also could follow suit. The Bridge and Anfield are missing out because their pitches are too small.
The UK and Ireland are bidding against Turkey for Euro 2028 – though Turkey is also bidding for Euro 2032 against Italy – for what is expected to be an expanded 32-team tournament.
Meanwhile, Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United stadiums are under consideration for usage during the tournament. Ireland is expected to have two host stadiums, while Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland will have one each.
The preliminary bid dossier is due to be submitted to UEFA by mid-November, with the final dossier due in April before the vote next September. It remains to be seen if Stamford Bridge can make the cut. The west London stadium last hosted an international game in 2013 between Brazil and Russia.
The 10 stadiums still in contention include: Wembley, the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, the London Stadium, Villa Park, Stadium MK, Old Trafford, the Etihad, Everton’s planned Bramley Moore Dock ground, Sunderland’s Stadium of Light and Newcastle United’s St James’ Park. Others could still qualify for the list if hospitality facilities are upgraded.
