Transfer News: Forgotten Chelsea full-back wants loan move to become permanent

Chelsea defender Abdul-Rahman Baba wants his loan move to become permanent

According to the Chelsea Chronicle (h/t football.london), Chelsea loanee Abdul-Rahman Baba wants his loan move to Reading to become permanent.

The 28-year-old left-back is on his second consecutive loan spell with the Championship club. And now he has admitted that he would like to move there on a permanent basis.

Coming back to Reading was like coming back home. I know the lads and the management, so it was like coming home. If the possibility comes up [to sign permanently] then why not, I’ll take it, but it’s the two clubs who have to deal. I am feeling at home here, I love it.

Baba joined the Blues in 2015 after completing a move from German side FC Augsburg. But the Ghana international was never able to establish himself in the side. He spent most of his Chelsea career out on loan to different clubs.

The player has been out on loan to various clubs in different leagues like FC Schalke 04, Stade Reims, RCD Mallorca, PAOK Salonika and finally at Reading.

It is clear the player has almost no future at the west London club. With Ben Chilwell and Marc Cucurella competing for the left-back position at Chelsea, the 28-year-old is very unlikely to make it into the team in the foreseeable future.

Baba has only managed to make 23 appearances for the Blues in all competitions. He has, meanwhile, been on the books of the club for more than seven years. His current contract runs till 2024 (transfermarkt) and it would be wise to sell him now.

The club will be able to get something from the player’s sale and it will be better than losing the player for free. At 28, the left-back still has much to offer and it will be good for him to have a permanent club till his playing days.

Reading currently sit third on the Championship table and Baba will hope to help his team gain promotion this season. A forgotten player, it remains to be seen if the two clubs can come to an agreement for the sale of the player in the near future.

More Chelsea News:

There is clearly no need for him here, at least up until the point that manager Thomas Tuchel was in charge. With Cucurella and Chilwell already here, that is unlikely to change under new boss Graham Potter as well.

It’s better to offload him and try to get some money in transfer fees rather than lose him on a free transfer.
