Transfer News: Chelsea close to landing Marc Cucurella after successful medical

According to popular Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano on Twitter, Chelsea are closing in on signing Brighton left-back Marc Cucurella this summer after the player completed a successful medical recently.

Chelsea’s interest in Marc Cucurella has been prevalent for quite some time now with the talented player on Tuchel’s radar. Despite Brighton denying an agreement for the player, it seems like the Blues have managed to reach an agreement.

It is being claimed that the fee that Chelsea will pay to Brighton will be in the range of £55m guaranteed plus £7m in add-ons. Whilst it seems like a fairly high fee, it must be remembered that the 24-year-old is talented enough to make the fee look fair in the future.

A product of the famed Barcelona La Masia academy, Cucurella was very highly rated during his time with the academy but he could not break into the first team due to the presence of Jordi Alba, who has been a mainstay in the Barcelona defence for many years now.

He eventually moved on to Getafe before signing for Graham Potter’s side at the beginning of last season. Cucurella really impressed in Graham Potter’s side and his impressive performances meant that the top clubs were interested in him come this transfer window.

Cucurella took to English football like fish to water, taking very little time to adapt to a league where foreign players generally take time to thrive. Hence, it is expected that he must not have any issues adapting to Chelsea and Thomas Tuchel.

It is not clear as to how the German tactician wants to use the Spaniard in his team. The most obvious option seems to be left wing-back but we have Ben Chilwell and Emerson Palmieri there, and even Marcos Alonso although he is keen to leave.

There could be a chance that Tuchel is planning to use him in a back three as the left-sided centre-back and make him play a role similar to what Antonio Rudiger did for him very successfully as long as he was with the Blues and the Spaniard can do this role too.

Cucurella to Chelsea seems a bit expensive but he has what it takes to succeed at Stamford Bridge. Only time will tell how this transfer pans out.
