“Portrayed worse”- Timo Werner opens up on his time at Chelsea

Timo Werner not happy about how his debut season at Chelsea was perceived

According to Bobby Vincent of Football.London on Twitter, Timo Werner, who recently returned to RB Leipzig from Chelsea, was not happy at how people perceived his debut season at Stamford Bridge. This despite him being the club’s top-scorer and the team lifting the Champions League in 2020/21.

The German international went on to speak about his missed chances in the first year and multiple VAR decisions going against him. He then added as to how those two factors led to him losing confidence by the time his second season in London rolled around.

In spite of his claims, the 26-year-old did have an underwhelming first year at Chelsea, where he scored only 12 goals in 52 appearances in all competitions. Him being a big money signing from Leipzig, a lot more was expected.

Following that, Werner managed 11 goals in 37 appearances in all competitions last season, resorting to a place on the bench in several games. It was clear by then that the forward hasn’t done enough to really justify his massive price tag.

It has to be noted that when Werner was signed by Chelsea, Frank Lampard was in charge of the team. Since then, Thomas Tuchel took over, won the Champions League and did well last season. However, neither of the managers could really get the best out of the player.

Leaving the club after two underwhelming years and then immediately speaking about how people perceived his time sounds like sour grapes. Not every player can go to a new club and make it happen for himself. Some take time and some move on to try elsewhere.

More Chelsea News:

Werner is still a talented player and someone who will continue to be a top forward for Leipzig in months and years to come. It just happened to be that his time at Chelsea was below par at best. It is time for him to move on and not look at what happened in his time at Stamford Bridge.
