According to Standard Sport, Bundesliga side RB Leipzig are interested and have joined the race with a host of clubs to sign young Chelsea defender Trevoh Chalobah on loan before the deadline of this transfer window. They have already sealed the signing of Timo Werner from the Blues on a permanent basis.
Chalobah has been linked with a number of clubs this summer, including Serie A duo Inter Milan and AS Roma and London rivals Tottenham Hotspur. Chelsea are not keen to sell the player on a permanent deal, rather they would prefer to loan him out once they complete another signing in central defence.
Leipzig are experiencing injury issues at the back, with the recent injury to Lukas Klostermann further subtracting their options in that department. As of now, they have three fit centre-backs available, two of whom are young Josko Gvardiol (20) and Mohamed Simakan (22). The other option is 29-year-old Willy Orban.
So, it makes sense why the German side are interested in adding more bodies to their central defence. Chalobah, who is a Chelsea academy product, is not a bad option to look at to bolster that area of the team.
The 23-year-old had a breakthrough season with the Blues last season, making 20 league appearances and other big games in domestic cups and the Champions League. He has had experience of loan moves outside England, having spent a season with French side FC Lorient in 2020/21. He has played at Huddersfield Town and Ipswich Town as well.
It is clear that if Chelsea do manage to sign another centre-back, Wesley Fofana being strongly linked, game time for Chalobah would be hard to come by. Hence, the player should look for a move as soon as possible, so that he doesn’t spend a season warming the bench at Stamford Bridge.
From the Blues’ viewpoint, the club knows how good the prospect of this player is. Right now they wouldn’t have a place for him, but the likes of Thiago Silva (37) ain’t going to last forever. So, let the youngster go out on loan, get the experience and come back next year to fight for a place in the team.
But we must be careful so as to not be understaffed in this area for the season ahead of us. An injury or two in that department could force Tuchel into making some odd decisions – one of which he has already made with playing Reece James as a makeshift centre-back in the 3-0 loss against Leeds United.
