Chelsea stopper nominated for prestigious award for the second year running

Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy nominated for the Yashin Trophy

Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy has been nominated for the Yashin Trophy of 2022. He is joined by three other Premier League goalkeepers to receive such a nomination (h/t The Sun).

Mendy was in fine form last season helping his side reach two domestic finals and finishing third in the league. The 30-year-old also helped his country Senegal win the Africa Cup of Nations and subsequently qualify for the World Cup in November.

The Senegal international joined Chelsea from French Stade Rennais in 2020 for £22 million. He has established himself as the undisputed number one in the side, helping the club win the Champions League and Club World Cup in his first year between the sticks.

He also enjoyed a decent league campaign last season. The goalkeeper kept 14 clean sheets in 34 league appearances for the Blues. He also did not concede any in the two domestic cup finals, and only went on to lose both the games on penalties.

Petr Cech was the person who bought Mendy into the club. He followed his idol’s footsteps, as both players joined Chelsea from Rennais. The 30-year-old has established himself as one of the best in the league and has pushed Kepa Arrizabalaga down the pecking order.

Kepa is expected to leave the club this summer to get more playing time. Napoli are said to be interested in taking the Spanish goalkeeper on loan, but not as such has materialised so far. Thomas Tuchel prefers Mendy over Kepa and it would be wise for him to seek to ply his trade elsewhere.

However, Mendy is unlikely to win the award this year. Former Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois is arguably the favourite to win the prestigious award after helping his current side Real Madrid win the La Liga and the Champions League. Mendy had narrowly missed out on the trophy last year as well, but that time to Gianluigi Donnarumma.
