Chelsea left-back Marcos Alonso has rejected a move to Inter Milan as he is waiting for a move to his favoured club, Barcelona, according to Fabrizio Romano. I Nerazzurri were enquiring about him as they wanted a replacement in case of Robin Gosens’ potential exit.
The 31-year-old left-back has massively fallen down the pecking order under manager Thomas Tuchel. The former Fiorentina was a trusted weapon for ex-manager Antonio Conte down the left-hand side of the pitch at Chelsea.
However, he hasn’t managed to win manager Thomas Tuchel’s trust. The German boss played the Spain international last season on numerous occasions after Ben Chilwell’s season-ending injury.
However, with the England international back from his spell on the sidelines and the club signing Marco Cucurella from Brighton & Hove Albion, it is understandable that Alonso may not be getting a lot of minutes if he stays with us.
As such, it is a smart option for him to go to Barca, where he could be a part of manager Xavi Hernandez’s plans. Veteran left-back Jordi Alba seems to have lost the trust of his manager after his team’s 0-0 draw against Rayo Vallecano.
Since then, 18-year-old Alejandro Balde has started in that position for his club’s wins against Real Sociedad and Real Valladolid. Hence, Alonso could be Xavi’s first-choice player in that position if he joins the Camp Nou outfit.
The FIFA World Cup in November would also be on Alonso’s mind, and he would be in a direct battle with Alba to be a starter in Spain’s side.
However, it is worth mentioning that any deal for Alonso is not official right now. We would know in due time about his future with the transfer window deadline on September 1 at 11 PM BST.
