Barcelona president hints at new signing amid links to Chelsea veteran

Transfer News: Barcelona president drops hint on Chelsea veteran Marcos Alonso

Speaking in an interview as quoted by popular Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano on Twitter, Barcelona president Joan Laporta hints at the club securing a new signing amid links to Chelsea veteran Marcos Alonso this summer.

Marcos Alonso has heavily been linked with a move back to Spain in recent weeks with Barcelona said to be favourites for the signature of the Chelsea veteran. The left-back has been at Chelsea for many seasons now but it looks like his time is up.

Alonso has been a great servant for the Blues. He joined Chelsea from Fiorentina in 2016 and has since then gone on to have a very mixed time at Stamford Bridge. He has been a great utility player but he has never shown enough to be a starter.

Despite regularly receiving criticism for his performances, Alonso has proven to be a really good backup player. Last season, he performed admirably after being given a more prominent role in the team due to an injury suffered by Ben Chilwell.

Alonso played 46 times for the Blues under Thomas Tuchel last season scoring five goals and providing six assists across all competitions. These numbers are very impressive for a player who was largely expected to be a rotational player.

It makes sense that the Spaniard wants to leave the club and move to Barcelona ahead of the new season in Spain. After all, the 31-year-old is approaching the fag end of his career and it seems the ideal choice to run down his career in his home country.

“We will complete one more signing with an agreement in principle”

Alonso is at the stage of his career when his next move is likely to be his last big move and Barcelona is a solid choice for the player. The 31-year-old also finds himself in the scheme of things for the Qatar World cup and playing in Spain makes a much more pressing case for his inclusion.
