Thomas Tuchel was not a happy man as Arsenal thrashed Chelsea 4-0 in a pre-season friendly in Orlando. The Gunners scored two in each half as they swept aside a disappointing Stamford Bridge side.
Gabriel Jesus opened the scoring for our Premier League rivals, with Martin Odegaard, Bukayo Saka and Albert Sambi Lakonga scoring the rest.
And speaking after the game via football.london, was far from satisfied with the display of his team. He thought the Blues weren’t good enough and questioned the side’s lack of spirit.
“Far from relaxed. I think we deserved to lose – which is fair enough – because we were simply not good enough. We were absolutely not competitive. The worrying part is the level of commitment, physically and mentally, for this match was not the same, it was far higher for Arsenal than us.”
The game involved a strong Arsenal side, although most of our first team players featured as well in the game. Overall, the team looked out of ideas for most of the game.
Another problem we faced was in front of the goal. Chelsea had certain periods in the game to put the ball in the back of the net but failed to capitalise on the chances.
Tuchel pointed this fact out as well. We hit the post in the first half. The gaffer felt the team created plenty of chances in the game, especially in the second half, but with the “same players”, the German doesn’t expect it to change.
“Listen, it’s the same players, so why should anything change? We will see hopefully development but at the moment, we have the same issues because we have the same players.”
Chelsea’s top goalscorer last season was Romelu Lukaku. The Belgian arrived to huge expectations. Fans felt he was the missing piece in our quest for the title. But the 29-year-old was highly disappointing. He rejoined Inter Milan on loan this summer.
Timo Werner is another forward who’s been a letdown since his arrival. The German had a proven track record in front of goal for RB Leipzig, but his time in London has been far from prolific. There’s also uncertainty around the 25-year-old’s future at the club.
Chelsea have signed only one forward in Raheem Sterling as of yet in this transfer window. We require a proven goalscorer. Hopefully, the hierarchy realises that and brings in a quality addition this summer.
