Chelsea set to miss out on talented 27-year-old Serie A midfielder

Transfer News: Chelsea set to miss out on Juventus midfielder Adrien Rabiot

According to Daily Star, Chelsea are set to miss out on a deal for Juventus midfielder Adrien Rabiot with Newcastle United said to be leading the race for the French midfielder.

The former Paris Saint-Germain man joined Juventus in 2019 on a free transfer and has had a very mixed time at Turin all these years. Highly rated when he joined the Bianconeri, Rabiot has failed to convince on a regular basis and his performances have left a lot to be desired.

The 27-year-old has played 45 times for the Old Lady this season, failing to score even a single goal and providing just two assists across all competitions. With his contract with Juventus expiring in 2023, the French midfielder would be available on a cut-price deal this summer.

Chelsea are said to be keen on bringing Rabiot to Stamford Bridge but it has now emerged that Newcastle United are ahead in the race to sign the Frenchman. The Magpies appear to be a team to watch out for next season.

Dicey transfer?

Whilst Adrien Rabiot has the qualities required to succeed at a big club, he has displayed them on very rare occasions and is extremely inconsistent. Reuniting with former boss Thomas Tuchel could see him reignite his best form.

It makes sense that Chelsea want to reinforce their midfield in the summer but signing the French midfielder does not seem like the wisest choice. Yes, N’Golo Kante and Jorginho are getting older and need to be replaced down the line but we could look at other options for the same.

Rabiot is versatile enough to play in defensive midfield, attacking midfield and even as a left wing-back but that is not sufficient to claim that this will be a sensible transfer. We have players like Conor Gallagher and Billy Gilmour who are much younger and already more consistent waiting on the wings and we could trust them to do a job.

We should not forget Mateo Kovacic. When fit, the Croatian is an absolute beast in midfield and he is likely to take over the mantle from one of Kante or Jorginho in the future. Signing Rabiot might leave us stuck with other players like Ross Barkley and Ruben Loftus-Cheek who are capable of the spectacular but only show it very rarely.

Rabiot could join Newcastle United and go on to become an absolute gem of a player but going by his past performances with PSG and Juventus, it is best we do not bite on this cherry right now.
