According to Blue Footy via Barca Universal (h/t Football.London), Chelsea will ask for less than €5million to sell long time club captain Cesar Azpilicueta to Spanish giants Barcelona in the summer.
The Spanish defender joined Chelsea from Marseille back in 2012 and has since then gone on to have a very successful 10 years at Stamford Bridge. Always dependable and extremely consistent, Azpilicueta has been the face of the Blues team in the past few years.
This season has been no different for the veteran, often forced to play out at right wing-back due to Reece James’ injury but still managing to do a great job at it. The 32-year-old has played 47 times for Thomas Tuchel’s men this season scoring three goals and providing three assists.
Barcelona’s interest in the player is no secret with the Spanish giants keen on taking the talented defender back to his home country. Although Azpilicueta had a contract extension for another year with the Blues, he could still leave.
Having been at the club for so many years and having won everything that is there to be won, it makes sense that Azpilicueta is looking for a fresh challenge.
At 32, the Spaniard is slowly yet surely reaching the twilight years of his career although his performances tend to paint a different picture. A return to his home country might be how Azpilicueta wants to wind down his career and a club like Barcelona are offering him the perfect opportunity.
To say that Azpilicueta has been a great servant for the Blues will be an understatement. Highly underrated for many many years, the club captain is undoubtedly one of Chelsea’s best players over the last decade.
Willing to play wherever the team demands him to, the 32-year-old has played everywhere across the back-line in recent years and he never looks out of place. If he were to leave, the Blues will not only be losing a quality player but also a great leader.
However, if Cesar Azpilicueta wants to leave, it is only right that we let him leave on his own terms. For all that the man has done for this club, this is the least we can do for him when he wants it.
If we get a seven-figure fee in return for him, then that’s a bonus.
