Fabrizio Romano: Chelsea to sign two centre-backs as decision on Leicester City and Crystal Palace target Levi Colwill pending

According to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, Chelsea are looking to sign two centre-backs this summer and will make a decision on youngster Levi Colwill soon as a number of clubs are looking to sign the defender on a permanent deal.

The Blues are yet to make a decision on the future of the U23 prospect who impressed out on loan at Huddersfield last season. The 19-year-old is attracting interest from other Premier League clubs as Leicester, Crystal Palace, Brighton and Nottingham Forest have asked the Stamford Bridge club about the young English defender.

The need for centre-backs

With Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen leaving Chelsea on a free transfer and Cesar Azpilicueta linked with a move away from the club, it’s difficult to envision who the Blues’ backline will consist of next season.

With Thiago Silva probably being the only experienced first-choice at Thomas Tuchel’s disposal next season, the side from West London needs decent defensive additions to the squad. It’s imperative that Chelsea go into the summer transfer window and buy two centre-backs who can fit right next to our 37-year-old Brazilian stalwart.

Other options like Trevoh Chalobah and Malang Sarr currently lack the necessary quality and experience but can come into the team when needed.

As for Colwill, the lad played a big role in the Terriers’ push for promotion to the Premier League last season. The young centre-back made it to the finals of the play-offs with Huddersfield, but the Tricky Trees narrowly beat the side from West Yorkshire.

Chelsea’s defence is shorthanded currently.

With the current defensive situation Tuchel faces, the 19-year-old should be looking to impress the German boss for a place in the squad next season. But with the Blues pushing to sign two centre-backs this summer, it seems unlikely that Colwill will be able to get a lot of minutes if he stays at the club.

On the other hand, a permanent move for the 19-year-old would be a bit premature on Chelsea’s part. It remains to be seen how the young English defender progresses, but we wouldn’t want to miss out on another defensive prospect as Chelsea did with Fikayo Tomori and Marc Guehi.

With this in mind, a loan move to a Premier League side where Colwill can get minutes under his belt will be the best bet for the player and the club.
