Chelsea have seemingly held talks with Lazio for midfielder Sergej Milinkovic-Savic. The 27-year-old midfielder is a potential target to strengthen the Blues’ midfield. Lazio’s director has also apparently held meetings with several English sides.
According to Italian outlet Calciomercato via Football Italia (h/t Football.London), Chelsea lead Manchester United in the race for the talented midfielder, with Erik ten Hag focused more on signing Barcelona’s Frenkie de Jong.
With 2 years left on the Serbian’s contract, the Italian club values him at around £60million. Milinkovic-Savic’s future under Maurizio Sarri is uncertain as Lazio have failed to qualify for the Champions League.
After a disappointing end to the season, losing the Carabao Cup and FA Cup finals, Thomas Tuchel will hope to strengthen the team, especially the midfield. Mateo Kovacic, N’Golo Kante and Jorginho are the mainstays in Chelsea’s midfield, but they’ve been overworked.
They were worn out by the end of the season and it was reflected in the Blues’ performances. Ruben Loftus-Cheek showed some glimpses but wasn’t trusted by Tuchel in the midfield and Saul’s time in London was spent mostly on the bench.
Euro 2020 winner Jorginho’s time at Stamford Bridge could be coming to an end with Juventus being linked with the player for a while now. The Italian has won major trophies at the club but some fans are still underwhelmed by him.
As for Kovacic and Kante, they’re both important players for Chelsea, but injuries have forced Tuchel to play with a makeshift midfield. The possible arrival of Milinkovi-Savic could prove beneficial for the team and will add the necessary quality needed to challenge for titles.
With Aurelien Tchuoameni choosing Madrid and West Ham putting an enormous price tag on Declan Rice, the Serbian is the most reasonable target for Chelsea to go after- at least that is what some of our fans may believe.
Savic is a reliable player out of possession and a very exciting player with the ball in the final third. With Tuchel playing a two-man central midfield on a regular basis, the Serbian looks like the next workhorse we need.
