The wait is over and a deal is over the line, as confirmed by Inter Milan’s official Twitter account, Romelu Lukaku is back at Inter Milan and Chelsea are once again without a number nine.
What was supposed to be a dream homecoming has now officially ended (at least temporarily) in unceremonious circumstances.
15 goals in 44 appearances – a disastrous return on a £97.5m investment made less than a year ago, but it’s not just numbers that have turned the Lukaku signing into an unmitigated disaster.
The striker’s comments during an unsanctioned Sky Italia interview was outright disrespectful to Chelsea management and most importantly, supporters. We had reached a point of no return, and the relationship between Thomas Tuchel and Lukaku was over.
Chelsea and Inter, both have now made the loan-deal official. €8m fee for one year with no obligation or option to buy, as reported previously by Fabrizio Romano.
Lukaku was spotted earlier in the day waving to Inter fans after arriving in Milan earlier this morning. Inter revealed in a social media post that the Belgian will be donning No. 90 on his back next season.
Chelsea fans, although overwhelmingly against Lukaku, will be secretly hoping that he can perform just well enough for Inter to be convinced into making his loan permanent.
The same negative emotion and sour opinion surrounding Lukaku is reflected in fan replies on Chelsea’s official announcement confirming Lukaku’s exit on Twitter:
