Chelsea looking at other targets as PL rivals seek ‘astronomical’ fee for young Frenchman

Transfer News: Chelsea unlikely to sign Wesley Fofana as Leicester seek ‘astronomical’ figure

According to CBS Sports’ Ben Jacobs (h/t football.london), Chelsea will look to sign other centre-back options as Leicester City seek an ‘astronomical price’ for Wesley Fofana.

The Blues realise that it’ll be difficult to entice the Foxes to part ways with their young French defender for anything other than a significant transfer fee. With this in mind, the Stamford Bridge club is focusing on other targets for the centre-back spot.

Need sensible signings

Chelsea are in dire need of centre-backs right now as Thomas Tuchel’s side only consists of Thiago Silva, Trevoh Chalobah and Malang Sarr. Cesar Azpilicueta is still an option, of course, but the veteran looks likely to leave this summer.

Signing anyone currently other than a proven world-class defender will hurt the Blues’ chances of competing for silverware next season. And the side from West London requires not one but two centre-backs as last season’s first-choice Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen both decided to part ways with the club.

Chelsea are looking at signing defenders and Fofana has been one of the names mentioned. In his debut season, the young centre-back made an impressive start in the Premier League and became a regular at the King Power Stadium. An injury kept him on the sidelines last season, but the 21-year-old still has a bright future ahead.

But with Leicester potentially asking for a hefty sum for the French national, it’s wise that the Blues invest that money in a player that has been consistent and at the top of their game for a while now.

Signing the young defender right now makes sense for Chelsea’s future, but right now, we need someone that can come in and make an immediate impact. So instead of spending big money on a potentially great player, the club should seek to sign centre-backs that can come right into the side and help us challenge for titles.

Stamford Bridge already has some young prospects, especially 22-year-old Chalobah, who has shown that he can come into the team and be solid when required.

Levi Colwill is a player that could be trusted although it would be a surprise if Tuchel banks on two young Englishmen to lead his backline next season. It’s better to reinforce our backline with quality because if we compromise, we could pay the price for it.
