According to Football.London, Chelsea have entered the race to sign Brighton & Hove Albion midfielder Yves Bissouma in the upcoming summer transfer window.
Since making the switch to Brighton from Lille in 2018, Bissouma has developed into a crucial member of the Seagulls’ squad. Despite injuries, the Mali international has enjoyed a decent spell in the recent campaign. He bagged two goals and two assists in 28 Premier League appearances impressing in the defensive midfielder’s role.
Chelsea have been highly interested in French starlet Aurelien Tchouameni for midfield reinforcement. However, it is believed that the Monaco star is more inclined toward joining Real Madrid. On top of that, the 22-year-old’s £83m price tag makes it increasingly difficult for us to make an aggressive approach.
Chelsea are now believed to have shortlisted Brighton’s Yves Bissouma for the defensive midfield role. The Mali international is expected to come a lot cheaper than Tchouameni. Furthermore, there would be less competition for his signature compared to the Monaco midfielder.
Chelsea’s regular midfield contingent involves the likes of N’Golo Kanté, Jorginho and Mateo Kovačić. Even though these three players have been sensational over the last few campaigns, there isn’t much backup for them in the team in terms of quality.
To fill the requirement Chelsea signed Saúl Ñíguez on loan last summer, who has failed to adapt to the league and will return to Atletico Madrid. Due to the drop of form in Ross Barkley, Thomas Tuchel was only left with Ruben Loftus-Cheek who has suffered recurring injury issues throughout his Blues career.
Bissouma has given mature performances for Brighton, which reflects that the midfielder has become accustomed to the Premier League action and could provide an instant impact upon his arrival at Chelsea. He might not be as spectacular at Tchouameni, but with time he can turn into a monster.
Tchouameni is most likely to choose Real over Chelsea. Hence our board has to shift focus to other targets. There are other positions in the squad that require priority attention and the Blues would be able to concentrate on them after concluding the midfield signature. As the summer window is approaching fast our board has to make a decision regarding Bissouma.
