Transfer News: Chelsea target Christopher Nkunku wants to leave RB Leipzig this summer

According to the French media L’Équipe (h/t Football.London), Chelsea target Christopher Nkunku has expressed his desire to leave RB Leipzig in the summer transfer window. He is one of the most prolific attackers in world football at this moment, making him an attractive addition to any team.

Leipzig nevertheless want to keep Nkunku in their squad despite his current transfer stance. He has taken this decision with a desire to play against top-class opposition at regular intervals. He has been a long-term transfer target for the Blues, and they have scouted him over the past few seasons and even recently as well.

The Frenchman will see his current contract with the Bundesliga side expire in the summer of 2024. However, despite the revelation of the attacker’s stance, the West London club would only decide on a potential transfer once the ownership takeover is complete.

Nkunku, a perfect fit for Chelsea?

The 24-year-old has scored an outrageous 31 goals and 20 assists this season from 48 matches across all competitions. That shows how good the forward has been throughout the current campaign, and signing the attacker would be a major statement from Thomas Tuchel’s side.

The Bundesliga ace has played more like a second striker this term while being versatile enough to play in several positions across the front line. That could suit Tuchel’s flexible and fluid attacking style of play which is the reason why Kai Havertz has succeeded in the centre of the attack, unlike Romelu Lukaku, for example.

Following Timo Werner’s recent rise in form as well, it makes even more sense for the German boss to target Nkunku. Now that we have received the Leipzig forward’s latest stance, we are given even more initiative to push ahead with a potential transfer at the end of this term.

The German side’s intention to keep hold of Nkunku could be a problem, although that could be solved if the attacker pressures his club to let him leave after this season. With two years left in his current deal, we could be in line for a hard bargain as they hold most of the cards regarding his future for now.

It remains to be seen if we can finally get our hands on our long term target this summer. We hope to see that happen as our attack needs a boost as it has been a weak point for quite some time. However, with so many options available at this point, we may need to facilitate some departures to bring in Nkunku.

Then again, for that to happen, we must take care of this sale process at the earliest as it should be our priority at this point.
