Transfer News: Chelsea have entered the race to sign RB Leipzig centre-back Josko Gvardiol

According to transfer news on Goal (h/t Football.London), Chelsea are set to battle Tottenham Hotspur for the signature of RB Leipzig centre-back Josko Gvardiol

Gvardiol has consistently given solid spells since becoming an RB Leipzig player in January 2021. Still only 20, the Croatian star has featured in 44 appearances across all competitions for his team, missing out on very few matches. He has also bagged two goals and three assists in this term.

Chelsea are set to face a massive defensive problem at the end of the season as two of the Blues’ crucial defenders – Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen, are set to leave the club in the summer transfer window. At the same time, the futures of Marcos Alonso and César Azpilicueta in our starting XI remain up in the air largely due to their age and their ability to continue at the very top level on a consistent basis.

Chelsea are believed to be interested in signing RB Leipzig centre-back Josko Gvardiol as a replacement for contract rebel Antonio Rudiger. But they are not alone, as Tottenham Hotspur are in the race as well. As things stand, the Premier League duo could engage in a transfer battle in the following summer window.

How can Josko Gvardiol help our team?

It seems very certain that Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen will leave the club in the summer window. Even though youngsters like Malang Sarr and Trevoh Chalobah are there, they have not yet reached the point where they can be trusted to a large extent week in, week out.

Chalobah actually had a good start to this season, making regular appearances for the Blues. But he has massively struggled for starts in April this year and that raises question marks over Tuchel’s trust in the youngster.

Amid such a situation, Chelsea need a quality centre-back who can lead their defensive line for years to come. While Gvardiol moved to the Bundesliga just last year when Ibrahima Koante departed for Liverpool, he has made a big name for himself since then.

However, to secure the transfer of the Croatian defender, our team may have to beat Antonio Conte’s Tottenham in the race. The Lilywhites could use a centre-back themselves but Chelsea arguably need one more badly, especially with Thiago Silva’s age.

Whatever the case may be, our board has to be quick-witted in securing the transfer for the 20-year-old, as a defensive reinforcement seems to be a necessity for us. Being first on the negotiation table we would showcase a sense of commitment towards potentially signing the Croatian star.
