According to 90 min (h/t Manchester Evening News), Chelsea are among the three clubs who have been offered the opportunity to sign talented American right-back Sergino Dest from Barcelona.
Along with the Blues, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur have also been touted as possible destinations for the electric full-back. However, a move to the Red Devils seems like the most exciting prospect to the talented youngster.
The former Ajax Amsterdam man joined Barcelona in 2021. While he has displayed his quality and talent on numerous occasions, Dest has been unable to get an extended run in the first team either due to inconsistent displays or due to injuries.
The 21-year-old US international has played a total of 31 times for the Blaugrana this season, providing three assists during this period. Whilst these numbers do not inspire much confidence, anybody who has seen Dest play knows that he is a far better player than what the statistics suggest. Given the correct guidance, he is capable of producing better numbers.
If Dest has indeed been offered to us, it would be a great decision to sign him if he is available at the right price. Undoubtedly a huge talent, if we can snap up the 21-year-old, he could be of great use to us for several years to come.
We’ve found ourselves extremely stretched in the full-back regions many times this season with both Ben Chilwell and Reece James missing significant chunks of the season with long-term injuries. Wing-backs are extremely essential for the way we play and in their absence, we tend to struggle a lot.
In Sergino Dest, we could be signing a player for two positions as the American defender is equally capable of playing on either flank. Although predominantly a right-back, Dest exclusively plays from the left for his national team and does a very good job there too.
Marcos Alonso is expected to leave the club this season and our ever versatile Cesar Azpilicueta could also be on his way out. We will undoubtedly have to reinforce our full-back positions and in Dest, we could be making a very smart signing indeed.
Of course, it all depends on if the player wants to join us in the first place. If Dest is willing to come, and we have the finances to make this deal happen, then signing the American seems like a no-brainer. Let’s see what happens though.
