According to TeamTalk (h/t Football.London), Chelsea have joined a host of top-tier clubs in the race to secure the signature of Nottingham Forest full-back Djed Spence.
The youngster has provided top-notch performances consistently in this campaign, helping Forest secure a respectable third spot in the Championship table. The full-back has scored three goals and given five assists in 46 appearances across all competitions, which is impressive considering he is only 21-year-old.
Djed Spence’s good form has attracted several top-tier clubs, including Arsenal, Tottenham, Liverpool, Bayern Munich and Barcelona. Now, TeamTalk (h/t Football.London) suggests Chelsea have also joined the race for the talented full-back who is viewed as a backup for Reece James at the West London outfit.
Nottingham Forest are believed to have priced Spence at £12-to-17million. But, his prices can increase significantly if all the interested teams engage in a bidding war.
Cesar Azpilicueta’s growing age suggests that the Blues captain wouldn’t be able to provide peak performances for a long time. With Reece James being the only recognized right-back, the pressure has mounted on the Blues academy star to play regularly and deliver consistently.
Even in this campaign, when James missed a few weeks due to fitness concerns, Thomas Tuchel struggled to find a quality player who could cover up for him. The German manager experimented by playing Malang Sarr and Trevoh Chalobah in the right-wing back spot, but they didn’t provide any optimistic output.
Djed Spence could flourish in the full-back role at Chelsea. Considering his recent impressive performances in the Championship, it might be easier for him to adapt to Blue’s philosophy than any foreign reinforcement.
However, the massive competition for the signature of the 21-year-old could create enormous problems on the negotiation table for Chelsea. It remains to be seen when the Blues make a solid move in the summer transfer window.
