According to AS (h/t the Irish Sun), Chelsea defender Andreas Christensen has agreed to a move to FC Barcelona next summer when his contract at Stamford Bridge expires.
Christensen is a key player for Chelsea and has played a big part in the club’s success under Thomas Tuchel. The Danish star has given solid performances in the 33 appearances he made for the West London based team this season.
The 26-year-old has been with Chelsea since 2012, but it seems he is not interested in extending the relationship. A move to Spain appears to be on the agenda with Christensen eyeing a switch to FC Barcelona.
It is believed that the Danish star has secured a lucrative five-year contract with the Spanish giants, which will pay him £21million across five seasons. His wages after joining the Catalan club will be around £4.2m per season – or £80,000 per week.
Apart from Christensen, Chelsea captain Cesar Azpilicueta and full-back Marcos Alonso are also interested in moving to Spain to play for FC Barcelona. This exodus of experienced defenders will leave us short manned heading into the 2022/23 campaign.
Andreas Christensen has been a reliable partner to Antonio Rudiger in the Chelsea backline for some time now. Even though the Danish star has made some blunders in recent matches, his overall performance has been encouraging.
Thiago Silva and Antonio Rudiger have been the preferred central defensive partnership for Thomas Tuchel this season. Nevertheless, Christensen has stepped up whenever required. Having such a talented defender in reserve has boosted the Blues’ defensive depth.
However, considering recent news, our team might not be able to enjoy the incredible services of Christensen from next season. The 26-year-old seems determined to move to Barcelona and could complete the transfer in the next few weeks.
Losing such a crucial player is definitely a major blow for our team. Our board should prioritise bringing quality defensive reinforcements as soon as possible to cover the void created by the Danish star’s imminent departure.
