Transfer News: Chelsea eye Brighton left-back Marc Cucurella and Borna Sosa as potential Marcos Alonso replacements

According to Football.London, Chelsea are interested in signing Brighton breakout star Marc Cucurella as they look to replace Marcos Alonso who is close to leaving Stamford Bridge.

The former Barcelona man joined Brighton from Getafe last summer and has gone on to establish himself as one of the best players in Graham Potter’s side. The talented left-back has impressed one and all with his performances and many clubs in the Premier League are keen on signing him.

The Spaniard has played 39 times for the Seagulls this season scoring one goal and providing two assists across all competitions. The 23-year-old is versatile, capable of playing as a left-back, left-midfielder and even as a centre-back on the odd occassion.

Marcos Alonso is said to be close to an exit with Barcelona favourites to land him, as per Mundo Deportivo (h/t football.london) and Chelsea are looking for options to replace the Spanish veteran and his countryman could be the answer with the Blues very much interested in Cucurella. The former Fiorentina man has been a solid servant at the Bridge ever since the season he spent under Antonio Conte.

A solid option?

Signing Cucurella seems to make a lot of sense to Chelsea as they would be signing a player who could offer cover in a variety of positions.

If the Spaniard indeed comes to Stamford Bridge, he could play as the left wing-back or even replace Antonio Rudiger on the left side of a back three. Such versatility offers Thomas Tuchel a great cushion going into next season and it remains to be seen as to how the German tactician uses him.

The other player Chelsea are being linked with is Borna Sosa from VFB Stuttgart. The Croatian left-back also offers the Blues a lot of quality but with proven experience in the Premier League, albeit for one season, Cucurella seems like the wiser choice.

Any player who comes in for the left-back position is likely to have a backup role to Ben Chilwell and may have to be content with that. On the other hand, we saw how Chilwell and Alonso competed for that position in the first few months of Thomas Tuchel’s reign.

It remains to be seen who the Blues chose to sign. It seems like Cucurella makes a lot of sense, but even if it was Borna Sosa, we’ll be getting a solid player. Any one of those would do very nicely and there is hardly a Chelsea fan who would disagree.
