Transfer Update: N’Golo Kante hints that he will stay at Chelsea for at least one more year

Speaking to Sky Sports in an interview prior to the Leicester City game as quoted by Football.London, Chelsea midfielder N’Golo Kante has opened up on his Chelsea future hinting that he’d stay at the club for at least one more year.

The Frenchman’s deal with the Blues is set to expire next summer and with him yet to pen down a new deal with the club, there was speculation about his future. However, the 31-year-old has seemingly put the rumours to bed by promising Chelsea his services for at least one more season.

Kante joined the Blues from Leicester City back in 2016 on the back of a phenomenal season where he helped the Foxes win the Premier League title. He has since then gone on to establish himself as a Chelsea legend, putting in many memorable performances on big occasions.

He has looked jaded at times this season but that could be because of the workload he has taken on his shoulder over the years in our famous Blue shirt. Speaking about his future at Stamford Bridge, the 2018 FIFA World Cup winner claimed that he will think about his future at the right time.

“The only thing is sure that I have one more year and the only thing is to finish this season. I’ll think about it in the right time.”

On the decline?

After seasons of flawless performances, injuries and age finally seem to be finally catching up with the 31-year-old and he has not been at his best this season.

Despite playing 40 times for the Blues across all competitions, the Frenchman’s performances have left a lot to be desired at times and he may no longer be the player that he once used to be. This does not mean that he is not important to Thomas Tuchel’s team, though, as he is still very much running things in the middle.

With his midfield partner-in-crime, Jorginho rumoured to make the exit the coming summer, losing two of their starting midfielders would have been catastrophic for the Blues. Kante’s admission thus would come as a welcome relief to Chelsea fans.

In Mateo Kovacic, Chelsea have a midfielder with astounding quality but injuries have not been kind to the Croatian. Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Ross Barkley have been on and off in their performances whilst Saul Niguez is set to go back to Atletico Madrid at the end of his loan spell.

With so much uncertainty in midfield, if Kante stays, it will be a huge boost for the Blues. This summer, hopefully, is a time when the Blues can focus on rebuilding their defence.
