According to Goal (h/t Metro), Chelsea ‘make contact’ with Arsenal starlet Khayon Edwards in order to facilitate a potential move for the young striker in the near future.
The 18-year-old has been generating some buzz and is linked to Premier League clubs such as Brighton & Hove Albion, Leeds United, and Southampton. Apart from this, clubs from Germany have also been on high alert regarding his situation.
Edwards is yet to sign a professional contract with the Gunners and could possibly leave on a free transfer this summer. However, if that does not happen Arsenal will have to receive some form of compensation. It is believed that the young striker has grown up as a fan of the Blues during his childhood days and this could be a tempting factor.
Chelsea have managed to create a stellar youth setup in the last decade or so. They have shown great potential and some of them have even gone on to create a name for themselves elsewhere. Declan Rice has gone on to become an integral part of West Ham as well as the England national team.
Tammy Abraham is now enjoying a fruitful spell under Jose Mourinho at AS Roma, whereas Mason Mount and Reece James have been an integral part of our club this campaign. This is testimony to how we have given deserving youngsters a great platform to strut their stuff on big occasions.
At 18, Edwards could possibly go on to become the torchbearer of the forward line at Stamford Bridge should we manage to secure his services. The current sanctions restrict Chelsea from signing any new deal but those would be done away with once our new owners are confirmed.
As such it would be interesting to see what turn this transfer saga takes. The Gunners are also trying to tie down Bukayo Saka with a long-term deal as his current contract with the club expires in 2024. Both Edwards and Saka are represented by the same agents.
The interest from a host of clubs could prove to be a potent barrier for the West Londoners along with his affiliation to our bitter rivals. That being said, we have seen players such as Cesc Fabregas, Nicolas Anelka, Ashley Cole, Olivier Giroud, and Petr Cech represent both teams throughout their playing careers. The Arsenal starlet could thus follow suit but only time can tell if the Blues manage to lure him to Stamford Bridge.
Currently, our forward options include Romelu Lukaku, Timo Werner, and Kai Havertz. The Belgian striker isn’t getting any younger while Havertz hasn’t really spent his career playing as a natural centre-forward. There is a spot that can open for Edwards in the future.
But it remains to be seen if we actually do sign him and give him a shot at first-team football so soon. After all, Tuchel had a relatively young and talented striker in Abraham but opted to stick with Werner and Lukaku instead.
