According to GOAL (h/t Football.London), AC Milan have emerged as a shock candidate to secure the signature of Chelsea star Romelu Lukaku this summer. He has been quite a disappointment for the English side, having joined them in a £97.5million move at the start of the 2021-22 season.
Lukaku has failed to showcase the quality that he was renowned for during his impressive spell with Inter Milan. His struggles are perfectly encapsulated in the recent 4-2 loss to Arsenal when he was booed off by the Blues supporters at Stamford Bridge.
However, it is now claimed that Milan could offer the Belgian an escape route from West London after the current campaign. That being said, any move could be “complicated” because of the high cost involved. After all, he is currently valued at a fee of around £77million, which is still quite a large sum given the recent struggles.
The 28-year-old has earned quite a lot of flak in recent weeks, which was further heightened following his another uninspiring display vs the Gunners. While the attacker has shown flashes of brilliance here and there, what frustrates us the most is how he has failed to make an impact, at least in some other sort of way.
Timo Werner, for example, was in a similar boat to Lukaku as he proved to be indecisive in front of the goal. Despite that, the German still performed well in other aspects like the build-up play when going through that difficult phase. Similarly, Havertz endured a difficult first campaign but was decisive for Thomas Tuchel’s side on multiple occasions.
However, Lukaku has not given us any leeway in that regard to keep defending him moving forward. However, like how Werner and Havertz turned things around in the second term, perhaps we should also give the former Inter man some time to adapt to his new surroundings.
However, whether the West London side would show patience with the Belgian international or not remains to be seen. After all, they did make a massive investment to sign the centre-forward, so it may not be wise to pull the plug this soon. However, their stance could probably depend on how long they are willing to endure the expenses.
Lukaku’s current wage package sees him earn £325,000-a-week in salaries which is quite a large sum indeed. Given his performances, it makes sense for the Blues to cash in on him while they can. Whether that will happen remains to be seen.
Moreover, one could also question whether the Premier League ace would be willing to further complicate his relationship with Simone Inzaghi’s side by joining their city rivals. Then again, it could ultimately depend on whether he is left with a choice in the matter.
