PL icon claims 28-year-old star made the ‘wrong’ choice by joining Chelsea

Patrice Evra claims that Romelu Lukaku’s move to Chelsea was a ‘wrong choice’

Speaking on Prime Video as quoted by Mirror, Manchester United icon Patrice Evra has said that Romelu Lukaku‘s decision to move from Inter Milan to Chelsea in the summer was the ‘wrong choice’

The Belgian striker moved to Stamford Bridge in the summer but has struggled to make the kind of impact expected of him following his move to London. Lukaku has since then lost his place to Kai Havertz in the starting 11 and is struggling to break into the team.

The former Manchester United hitman was tearing it up with the Nerazzurri in the Serie A last season alongside Lautaro Martinez, playing a pivotal role in guiding them to their first Scudetto in 11 years. His exploits at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza earned him a lot of plaudits but all of that seems like a distant memory right now.

After such a sensational season at Inter, Lukaku’s decision to move to Stamford Bridge has not gone according to plan. Speaking about the transfer, Evra said that he feels the Belgian made the wrong choice.

“When he arrived in London he scored and did well; then he got injured and said he missed Inter. In the end, he created a bit of a mess with the [Chelsea] fans. He wanted to return to Chelsea at all costs, he should have stayed at Inter after such a high-level season. He made that choice there which for me is wrong”

The ‘missing piece’ that has gone missing?

When Romelu Lukaku moved to Stamford Bridge in the summer, he was expected to be the missing piece to complete the jigsaw at Thomas Tuchel’s Chelsea. However, things haven’t gone according to plan.

Whilst the 28-year-old had a decent start to life at Stamford Bridge, fast-forward to the present and he is struggling to cement a regular position in the playing XI. The Belgian international has managed a sub-par return of five goals and no assists in 20 Premier League games so far this campaign.

With Kai Havertz putting up some impressive performances in recent memory, the former Manchester United man has slipped even further down the pecking order at Chelsea. With all factors combined, it remains to be seen where the future lies for Lukaku this summer.

There is a question of whether it may be too soon to pull the plug on Lukaku’s time at Stamford Bridge. At his best, we all know that the 28-year-old is capable of being one of the deadliest strikers in the world. Injuries and Covid have not made it easy for the Belgian in his first season back in England.

We have not seen such performances in a Chelsea shirt yet. If Lukaku can rediscover his shooting boots, then the Belgian might not seem like a bad signing after all.
