Speaking ahead of the FA Cup tie against Middlesbrough as quoted by The Guardian, Thomas Tuchel has insisted that he expects the new owners at Chelsea to prioritize trophies over money.
Chelsea have been surrounded by uncertainty for the past few weeks ever since long time owner Roman Abramovich was sanctioned by the UK Government and had his assets, including the London club frozen. The Blues are operating on a special license subject to some restrictions until the sale of the club goes through.
The deadline for potential buyers to submit their first bid was yesterday and it has emerged that the consortium led by Todd Boehly, Hansjorg Wyss and Jonathan Goldstein are the leading candidates to be the new owners at Stamford Bridge. They have also been boosted with additional funding from Clearlake Capital.
Abramovich’s era at Stamford Bridge is one of the most glittering reigns in English football which has seen the Blues win all the possible trophies at least once. The Russian was never cash shy in the transfer market, prioritizing trophies as the club’s top target.
When Tuchel was asked on what he expects the new owners to be like, the German manager conceded that anyone looking to buy a club of Chelsea’s magnitude is likely to prioritize trophies over money
““If somebody buys a club for this amount of money then it’s about trophies”
After weeks of chaos and uncertainty, the Blues seem to finally be heading in the right direction and some clarity over the future seems to be taking shape.
When Abramovich’s assets were frozen by the Government, the future at Stamford Bridge looked bleak with even talks of the club shutting down floating around.
However, the ownership transfer seems to be happening as planned and soon Chelsea will know who their owners are. Tuchel will want his team to focus on football as they are still contesting for the Champions League and FA Cup.
Tuchel has made it clear that although new ownership is on the cards, the winning culture cultivated at Stamford Bridge should not be surrendered. A new dawn awaits Chelsea and it remains to be seen if it is as successful as the previous era.
