Kai Havertz: Players are willing to pay for travel expenses to help Chelsea amidst sanctions

Kai Havertz has conveyed that the players are willing to pay for travel expenses to help Chelsea in this dire time because of the imposed sanctions. He spoke on the matter ahead of his side’s match against Lille in the second leg of the Champions League round of 16 clash.

The UK Government have restricted the Blues’ ability to spend and meet expenses following their sanction on Roman Abramovich. As a result, the English club can only pay up to a maximum of £20,000 to take care of their travel expenses to travel for away fixtures.

Speaking in the pre-match press conference (h/t Football.London), Havertz has mentioned that the players would be ready to pay for the expenses as it is not a big deal for them. The forward has added that he is willing to pay for any means of travel as the most important thing for them is to play in matches.

“I would pay, it’s no problem. That’s not a big deal for us. For us to come to the games, that’s the most important thing. I think there are a lot of harder things in the world at the moment if we have to take the train or the bus to an away game. I would pay. It’s no problem.”

We are really appreciative of the fact that the players have taken this stance when the West London side is going through this rough period. That indicates the unity we have inside the club and the togetherness we have created within the camp. That is also highlighted in our displays on the pitch, which has been the case here as well.

That being said, this situation should not happen in the first place as the Government must help us get through this situation. After all, the club is a cultural asset as well, and our interests should not be affected in any case. As such, it remains to be seen how this situation would pan out moving forward.

Earlier Player-Care Group founder Hugo Scheckter had revealed that it would normally take at least £30,000 for a club to take care of all the expenses involved while travelling to an away fixture. That amount is well past the Government’s limit, so it remains to be seen how we will take care of the extra amount.

Perhaps, Havertz and co could chip in after all since they are ready to do so in this circumstance. We will be travelling to face off against Lille tomorrow in the second leg of the Champions League round of 16 tie. Following that, we also have a long trip to Middlesbrough, which would really test our finances. Only time will tell how we will manage all these obstacles in the next few days.
