Chelsea risk administration due to Abramovich’s refusal to sell club to buyers from select countries

Roman Abramovich does not want to sell Chelsea to owners belonging to Britain or the US

According to Daily Mail, Roman Abramovich is refusing to sell Chelsea to owners belonging to the countries that have sanctioned the Russian Oligarchs in the wake of the ongoing war in Ukraine.

The ownership saga at Chelsea could take yet another turn with the Russian possibly scuppering Blues plans and pushing them into administration. However unlikely that may sound at this moment, it still remains a possibility.

Despite being sanctioned by the UK Government and having his assets frozen, the Russian billionaire could still have a say on who the club will be sold to, with Abramovich apparently adamant that Chelsea must not go into the hands of a British or American bidder.

Roman Abramovich could scupper the sale of Chelsea.

This development means Chelsea could end up in administration, as the highest bid outside of America and Britain is likely to be from the Saudi Media group, but the Government is unlikely to entertain such an approach considering the backlash received recently during Newcastle’s recent ownership change.

The Government could still choose to seize Chelsea but there is still no clarity over the proceedings of the sale, with the Russian supposedly not being able to get any profit from the sale of the London outfit.

Back to square one?

Just when things were starting to turn for the better at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea seem to be thrown back to right where it all began with this new development. That is if it has any truth to it.

If Abramovich does refuse to sell the club to a British or American owner, then fans may start worrying about the future of the club. But if we know anything about the Russian owner from his time in London since 2003, it is that he would surely have the interests of Chelsea in his mind as well.

At this point, it is still not clear what is going to happen with Chelsea. After such a glittering reign at the helm of the Blues for 19-years, the last thing that Abramovich will want is to tarnish his reputation among the Stamford Bridge faithful.

Looks like the ownership saga could go on for longer than one imagined. It remains to be seen as to what happens next. It’s not like the club would have a shortage of suitors, with Chelsea one of the most famous, successful, and recognizable sports teams in the world- especially in the last couple of decades.

Whatever happens, fans would want this saga to end as soon as possible- as would our players. Let us just hope that whoever comes in as our new owner- if the sale goes ahead-, then they are able to match Abramovich’s ambition and ideology for Chelsea on the pitch and off it.
