Transfer boost for Chelsea as Newcastle United drop out out of Lucas Digne race

According to transfer guru, Fabrizio Romano on Twitter, Chelsea-linked left-back Lucas Digne will not be heading to Newcastle United anytime soon.

The Italian claimed that the Everton defender will decide his next club soon. The Frenchman is desperate to leave the Merseyside club after falling out with new Rafa Benitez earlier in the season.

Chelsea have been linked with signing Digne since the start of the January transfer window. With Romano reporting that Newcastle United are out of the race to snap up the left-back, the Blues can now make their move.

With Chelsea left-back Ben Chilwell ruled out for the rest of the season after undergoing knee surgery, the Blues would be looking for a replacement in the January transfer window as cover. Marcos Alonso remains the only other experienced left-back in Chelsea’s squad.

With half the season yet to be played, and multiple domestic cup clashes and a Champions League last-16 tie against Lille coming up soon, coach Thomas Tuchel would be fretting over his squad’s injury worries.

Lucas Digne is a name that the London club have been linked with constantly over the past few weeks, and Tuchel would have him high up on his wishlist during the January transfer window.

Lucas Digne has been linked to join Chelsea in January, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The news about Newcastle United dropping out of the race to sign Digne comes as good news for us. Chilwell’s injury could not have come at a worse time, with a heavy run of fixtures to be played in the coming weeks, across multiple competitions.

Marcos Alonso has done really well in Chilwell’s place, stringing together attacks and putting in a decent shift at the back. However, Alonso is also one injury away from sending us into a left-back emergency.

Signing Digne would be a great piece of business for us in January. Not only is he an experienced international who knows how to handle pressure at the highest level, but is also well versed with the pace and intensity of the Premier League.

The Frenchman would also fit in well with Tuchel’s system and is capable of working wonders at either end of the pitch. By roping in Digne, we would also be getting a set-piece expert as the left-back has a wand of a left foot, making him an asset on free kicks and corner duty.
