According to the Spanish publication Marca (h/t Football.London), Chelsea have received an update on the future of Erling Haaland as Borussia Dortmund have asked him to decide on renewing his contract by the end of the January transfer window. He is one of the highly coveted youngsters in the world, as a result, of his excellent displays in Germany.
The Blues tried to land the services of Haaland last summer but, Dortmund had no intentions of entertaining a move. They were keen on holding on to him for at least another season before deciding on his future. Thomas Tuchel’s side have retained their interest in him and could enquire about him in the future.
The German side gave the 21-year-old a deadline date of January 31 to decide on whether he wants to stay or leave the club at the end of the season. A transfer this month looks highly unlikely but, a summer move cannot be ruled out as it seems like he may be ready to go elsewhere.
If we have a chance to sign the Norwegian, then we should not let that pass, even if we have to make some changes in the squad. He has been sensational since his days at RB Salzburg, plus his release clause worth €75million makes him a steal considering his level of performance and potential.
We may have to do some tinkering if we end up signing the Bundesliga ace to accommodate him into the team. He could form a striking partnership with Romelu Lukaku, meaning we would see a change in the system. Whether it will be a throwback to the days of old where a 4-4-2 held the roost remains to be seen.
Players like Timo Werner, Christian Pulisic and Hakim Ziyech could be deemed dispensable to make way for the talented Norwegian striker. It is not like the forward trio has performed consistently at a level that warrants an extended stay at the Bridge.
It remains to be seen how the situation would develop in the coming days as the January transfer window edges closer to its end. With several clubs keen on the striker’s services, Chelsea will do well to act first before any of our rivals swoop in and land the player.
Haaland is certainly a generational talent and players of his inking do not come across very often. Chelsea should in fact do all they can to secure the 21-year-old’s services.
