Tottenham Hotspur step up their chase of Chelsea ace Antonio Rudiger amidst contract stalemate

According to Football Insider (h/t football.london), Tottenham Hotspur have stepped up in their pursuit of signing 28-year-old Chelsea star, Antonio Rudiger, amidst his contract issues at Stamford Bridge.

The German international has been playing some of his best football in the past year. His performances towards the end of last season and at the beginning of this campaign have led to the Blues winning the UCL title and competing for the Premier League trophy.

However, the defender is out of contract in the summer, and several clubs are circling for his signature. Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, and Paris Saint-Germain are thought to be the three clubs in the running to get a free transfer over the line.

But in a surprise move, Tottenham are increasing their interest in the player. Antonio Conte is plotting a rebuild at the North London club, and Fabio Paratici is apparently ‘pushing hard’ to secure an agreement for the centre-back.

No deal!

It was Conte in 2017 who brought Rudiger from AS Roma to West London. The 28-year-old did not have one of the most successful campaigns under him, but they did lift the FA Cup together. However, the Blues would not be keen on extending the pair’s relationship beyond this.

We can somehow make peace with one of our star defenders leaving at the end of the season, but it would be way tougher to do that if he ends up playing for our fiercest rivals in the game. Things at N17 are picking up, and the Italian boss is changing things pretty quickly. The men in blue would not be keen on speeding up this process by letting them sign one of the best defenders in the league.

Ideally, we would want to keep him within the ranks. But if he seeks an exit, it would bode well if the German seals a move to another country so that none of our rivals is strengthened in the process. He has been a loyal servant for the past four years and has been extremely professional during the current contract stalemate.

Only time will tell the intentions of the centre-back as the January transfer window is set to commence within a couple of weeks. But if he crosses the clearly marked line that divides Spurs and Chelsea, it would be hard to call him one of our own in the near future.
