Chelsea faced an injury-plagued Leeds United at Stamford Bridge but struggled to a 3-2 win courtesy of a Jorginho penalty in injury time. The Blues needed three points to help them through their recent slump, and they eventually clawed to what could be a very important victory.
Leeds opened the scoring through Raphinha, who put his penalty past Edouard Mendy. Marcos Alonso clumsily went down inside the box to clear the ball but completely missed and caught Daniel James in the process. However, Alonso rectified his mistake by assisting Mason Mount in the first half.
Jorginho gave the home side the lead before the hour mark from the penalty spot. Leeds substitute Joe Gelhardt scored minutes after coming on to tie the match. The game had every sign of being a draw but Jorginho had other ideas.
He had the last laugh of the game when Rudiger got fouled again inside the box by Mateusz Klich, and the spot-kick that followed was put away in injury time. It was far from an easy game, and the opponents outplayed Thomas Tuchel’s side in specific phases.
Earlier, Manchester City won 1-0 against Wolverhampton Wanderers through a Sterling penalty, whereas Liverpool got their 1-0 win against Aston Villa after Mohamed Salah had scored the winner through a spot-kick. The title race at the top between the three heavyweights is heating up after every matchday.
