Speaking in an interview, as quoted by The Express, Christian Falk of Bild revealed that Newcastle United are slightly confident of landing Chelsea ace Timo Werner in January due to their connections with him.
The 25-year-old signed for the Blues last summer for £45million. Much was expected of the former RB Leipzig star but he is yet to adjust to the style of the league. Werner is also lacking in confidence and charisma and needs a specific supporting cast to flourish.
However, he was crucial in our UEFA Champions League triumph last season and has had a role to play in our title challenge this term. Despite all of this, Newcastle United are targeting a move for him and are apparently confident of landing the German.
One of Newcastle’s players’, Fabian Schar, is managed by the same agency as Werner and this could be key in securing the striker’s signature. Christian Falk of BILD revealed the story in a little more detail.
“With Werner, they reckon they’ve got a bit of a chance. They’ve got contacts with the management. One of their players (Fabian Schar) is also managed by the German agency that represents Werner. Whether Werner will end up feeling so frustrated at Chelsea and then say, ‘I’ll give it a go in Newcastle’ is the big question.”
Thomas Tuchel may have his frustrations with his fellow countryman but is unlikely to offload him in January. The Blues are still competing on all fronts this season, including the Carabao Cup, FA Cup, and Club World Cup, with the latter to be played in the coming months.
Thus, squad depth has been a major factor to our success in all competitions. Werner has proven pivotal in some Premier League games, not to mention that he almost ensured top spot in our UCL group on the final matchday as he scored 2 goals and provided an assist against Zenit.
Thus, there is a lot to be excited about the centre-forward. He is still only 25 and can play in multiple roles. He has looked comfortable alongside Romelu Lukaku, and their partnership could prove pivotal in the years to come.
Newcastle can try their hand at the deal as they certainly have the money to do so. However, there is little indication that Chelsea shall entertain it, let alone enter into talks over a potential fee. Werner is currently battling the Covid-19 disease, but Tuchel would be waiting for the German international to be back fit and amongst the goals again.
