Former Chelsea ace Willy Caballero says Edouard Mendy is the best goalkeeper in the world

Speaking to BBC Radio 5 in a live interview (h/t BBC Sport), Former Manchester City and Chelsea player Willy Caballero has praised Edouard Mendy for his abilities and also named him as the best goalkeeper in the world today.

The 29-year-old was recently nominated for the FIFA Best Men’s Goalkeeper award 2021 for his excellent performances. He was crucial in the Blues’ journey to winning the Champions League last term. Mendy has carried that form into this season and helped his club onto the top spot in the Premier League table.

Thomas Tuchel’s side have the best defence in the league as they conceded just four goals. The Senegalese played a big part in that, namely the performance against newly promoted side Brentford. Caballero spent the last season as a third-choice goalkeeper and has first-hand experience of Mendy’s abilities.

Willy Caballero was a former Chelsea man.

“I believe strongly that Ed Mendy is the best goalkeeper [in the world] – last year and at the moment this year he is the best. As he arrived last season in training I saw an amazingly talented goalkeeper in terms of power, in terms of speed – he is so fast when diving.”

The Argentinian was adamant that his former teammate was the best keeper in the world. He explained how he was impressed by the Senegalese when he had arrived at Cobham. The ex-Man City player showered praises on the reflexes possessed by the Chelsea number one.

“He has very long arms and everyone wants that as a goalkeeper. He is showing in every single game that he is calm and he is improving with his feet, he is playing very well in the build-up.”

Mendy’s consistency is a sure tell to his abilities and his standing as the club’s top man between the sticks. The Senegalese international continues to showcase what a steal he has been for the club.

Caballero explained how the physique plays a part in the Senegal international’s success. He added that the Chelsea ace has become more comfortable on the ball and has a calm presence of mind.

The English club is blessed in that department as they have someone who can win games by being a commanding presence at the goal line.
