According to the Spanish outlet, AS (h/t Express), Manchester United will trigger the £69m clause to sign Chelsea target Jules Kounde.
Chelsea have targetted Kounde for a long time and even put an offer of £42.5million in front of the Sevilla board. The amount can seem reasonable from Chelsea’s point of view, but it was underwhelming for the Spanish team.
The Blues were able to convince the 22-years-old player with their sporting project. He even rejected Tottenham Hotspur’s offers in order to feature in Champions League games for Thomas Tuchel’s team.
Sevilla president Jose Castro agreed that they would have been able to disappear all previous debts with the amount. But Jules Kounde remain one of the ley players of the Sevillistas Rojiblancos. They needed his qualities on the pitch to compete for the title.
However, Sevilla is fearful that they could lose their key man in the hand of a Premier League team. And this time, the threat is not from Chelsea anymore. It’s United that are giving them headaches.
It is believed that United will trigger Kounde’s clause in the January transfer window that would see the defender leave the Spanish side midway inuo the season.
Sevilla stands 3rd on the La Liga table, just 1 point behind table topper Real Sociedad while playing one less game. Sevilla would look to take advantage of the opportunity when play resumes after the international break. They seem to fight for the title this season, and as things stand, they could earn the top spot beating Alaves in the home fixture.
But losing the French player would hurt Sevilla a lot as he has been consistent in the backline for the Spanish side. Chelsea could also suffer after coming so close in Kounde’s pursuit. Whether the Blues can steal a march on the Red Devils remains to be seen.
