Chelsea coach Thomas Tuchel provides injury update on Romelu Lukaku, Mateo Kovacic and Timo Werner

Speaking in the pre-match press conference (h/t The Athletic), Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel has issued an update on the injuries of Romelu Lukaku, Mateo Kovacic and Timo Werner ahead of the Premier League match against Leicester City.

Lukaku got injured in the game against Malmo in the Champions League, where the Blues won by a 4-0 scoreline. He was on the receiving end of a challenge from Lasse Nielsen and won a penalty for his team. However, he had sprained his ankle in the process and was out for some time.

Werner was injured in the same match as the Belgian whereas, Kovacic picked up a hamstring injury in a training session that took place last month. Tuchel revealed in the presser that the Belgian international and the Croatian would be unavailable for the clash against Leicester at King Power Stadium.

Tuchel informed that the 28-year-old is close to training with the whole squad and hopes he will be available against Juventus. He mentioned the midfielder would miss more matches, and he is not close to recovery. Lastly, he added that the 25-year-old could be available, but it would depend on the next training session.

“I can tell you that Mateo and Romelu are still out for tomorrow. Romelu is close to team training so hopefully will join the squad on Sunday, he is pushing hard to come back ASAP.”

Kovacic is still some way away from returning, unlike Werner who is already back in training. The German will need to take part in another session or two before his situation becomes clear.

“It will take Mateo more days until he is ready and he will miss more matches. Timo is in team training since yesterday, we will see as we have another training session in two hours. So maybe he can make the squad or the bench.”

The league leaders will travel to face Brendan Rodgers’ side with three points in their mind. Manchester City are hot on their heels, and the draw against Burnley helped them close the gap. A win would ensure that we keep the pressure and gain momentum for the packed fixture list ahead.
